A new youth and sports facility in Kirehe District is creating opportunities for sports, cultural activities, entertainment and tourism in the eastern part of Rwanda.
The Kirehe Youth Center, also known as Kirehe Gymnasium, is located in Nyakarambi Centre. The facility has a capacity of about 1,000 people and provides space for different indoor and outdoor activities.
Indoor sports such as volleyball, basketball and tennis can be played at the gymnasium, while handball and other sporting activities can take place outdoors. The facility can also accommodate other events, including concerts, festivals, cinema screenings, conferences and weddings.
The center was sponsored by Rusumo Power Company Limited (RCL). On 26 May 2026, RCL handed over the Kirehe Youth Center to Kirehe District.
A new attraction in Kirehe
Beyond its role as a sports facility, the Kirehe Gymnasium has the potential to become a new attraction for visitors to the district.
Its modern sports infrastructure provides a place where local residents and visitors can meet, attend events, take photographs and experience activities taking place in the district.
For Kirehe and neighbouring communities, the facility can also provide a new destination for recreation and social activities.
Promoting sport tourism
Sport is increasingly connected with tourism, as competitions can bring athletes, supporters and visitors from different parts of the country.
Kirehe is home to Kirehe Volleyball Club, and the district has produced volleyball players who have competed at professional and national levels.
With the new gymnasium, Kirehe has an opportunity to host more sporting events. When teams from other parts of Rwanda travel to Kirehe for competitions, their supporters can also visit the district.
A major volleyball match involving Kirehe Volleyball Club and teams such as REG, Police or other leading clubs could bring spectators from Kigali and other parts of the country.
Such events can also create opportunities for local businesses involved in accommodation, restaurants, transport, crafts and other services.
A platform for young artists
The Kirehe Youth Center can also provide a platform for young artists to develop and showcase their talents.
Young people can use the space for activities such as music, photography, poetry, painting and dance. Cultural events and exhibitions could give artists from Kirehe opportunities to present their work to local communities and visitors.
For young people living outside major urban centres, access to spaces where they can practice, learn and perform can be important for developing creative skills.
Investing in young people
The development of the center reflects the importance of creating spaces for Rwanda’s young population.
A youth center can bring together sport, culture, education, creativity and community activities under one roof. Training and skills-development programmes could also help young people gain knowledge and practical experience in different fields.
The facility can therefore contribute not only to recreation but also to wider community development.
Linking sport, culture and tourism
The Kirehe Youth Center demonstrates how infrastructure can serve several purposes at the same time. A sports facility can become a venue for cultural events, a meeting place for communities and a destination for visitors.
For Kirehe District, the gymnasium offers an opportunity to connect sport tourism with local culture, youth development and the local economy.
As more events are organized at the center, it could become one of the places that visitors associate with Kirehe, a space where people can watch sport, discover local talent, attend cultural events and experience the community.
The Kirehe Youth Center is therefore not only a gymnasium. It is a new piece of community infrastructure with potential to contribute to sports, youth development, culture and tourism in Kirehe District.
Contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals
The Kirehe Youth Center can also be linked to Rwanda’s implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 6 to SDG 11. These goals address areas including clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, decent work and economic growth, industry and infrastructure, reduced inequalities, and sustainable cities and communities.
Through its sports, youth, cultural and community activities, the center provides infrastructure that can support social inclusion, skills development, healthy lifestyles, community participation and local economic opportunities.
