NDAHIMANA Gilbert a Rwandan heritage photographer, cultural entrepreneur, independent researcher, travel writer, and heritage practitioner. My passion for photography began in my childhood, growing up in a family that valued
photographs as a way of preserving memories. My parents (passed away) loved photography and documented family milestones, inspiring my lifelong appreciation for visual storytelling.
Throughout my primary, secondary, and university education, I enjoyed documenting school events, celebrations, and educational trips. In the era of analog photography, my classmates and I would contribute money to purchase photographic film and hire a photographer to capture our shared memories. These experiences strengthened my passion for photography and its power to preserve history.
After graduating from university in 2014, when the Government of Rwanda was encouraging young people to create employment through entrepreneurship, I transformed my passion into a professional mission. I launched an initiative dedicated to promoting and conserving the heritage and tourism of Rwanda and Africa through photography and writing.
I began taking photographs with a phone, like a Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone, before acquiring my first camera. Photographing places and people myself became both a personal passion and a professional calling. Today, my work focuses on documenting the natural and cultural heritage of Rwanda and Africa, highlighting their history, traditions, living cultures, and tourism potential.
I am professionally trained in heritage conservation and management through programs organized by UNESCO, ICCROM, the African World Heritage Fund (AWHF), IUCN, and other heritage institutions. My expertise combines heritage conservation with photography, research, documentation, and community engagement. In 2015, I founded Umurage Wacu Group, a social enterprise dedicated to researching, documenting, photographing, and promoting natural and cultural heritage sites across Rwanda and Africa. Through photography, writing, and educational initiatives, the organization contributes to heritage conservation,
cultural awareness, and sustainable tourism development.
I believe that every photograph is more than an image; it is a record of history, identity, and culture. My work seeks to inspire people to appreciate, protect, and promote Africa’s rich heritage for future generations. Conservation is Richness!
